Hay 9.600 especies de árboles que están en peligro de extinción en el mundo
Según la lista de la Asociación Internacional de Jardines Botánicos
El primer catastro mundial de árboles publicado recientemente reveló que en el planeta hay 60.065 especies diferentes, de las cuales 9.600 están amenazadas, según la lista de la Asociación Internacional de Jardines Botánicos (BGCI), con sede en Londres.
Brasil es el país con una mayor diversidad de árboles, con 8.715 especies, seguido por Colombia con 5.776 e Indonesia con 5.142, según la lista de la organización internacional. “La principal razón de la BGCI para publicar la lista es para dar a la gente una herramienta para conservar las especies raras y que están amenazadas”, dijo la organización en un comunicado publicado por la Agencia AFP.
La asociación, con sede en Londres, representa a cerca de 2.500 jardines botánicos de todo el mundo y utilizó para confeccionar la lista más de 500 fuentes.
Del total de 60.065 especies contabilizadas, solo unas 20.000 se encuentran seguras y otras 9.600 están en peligro de extinción, en tanto 300 se encuentran en una situación crítica, al tener menos de 50 ejemplares censados en la actualidad.
“Actualmente, se sabe que cerca de 10.000 especies de árboles están en peligro de extinción, principalmente por la deforestación y la sobreexplotación”, indicó la organización.
Esta lista sigue siendo actualizada ya que cada año se descubren y se catalogan casi 2.000 nuevas plantas.
